Domenico Tedesco is officially introduced as the new head coach of Spartak. The German specialist has already held the first training session with the team and shared his expectations from working in the Moscow club.
October 14, Moscow “Spartak” announced the name of the new head coach of the team. They became a German specialist Domenico Tedesco, who had previously trained Erzgebirge and Schalke. A few hours before the official press conference at which the leadership of the red and white in the person of the club's general director Thomas Zornintroduced the 34-year-old coach to reporters, Tedesco held the first training session with his new wards. The presentation of the specialist itself was supposed to start at 17.00 Moscow time, but due to unforeseen circumstances, the event was postponed for an hour. As Tedesco himself stated, the delay in the press conference was connected with some working issues with his former club, Schalke. In March 2019, the leadership of the Gelsenkirchenians dismissed the German due to unsatisfactory results, but until his appointment to Spartak, he was still bound by a contract with the Pitmen.
“First of all, I apologize, it was necessary to settle some formalities with the previous club. As for Spartak, it is an honour for me to become a coach of such a team with a rich history. Now I’m just starting to get acquainted with the players, the club, and this feeling makes me very happy, ”- quotes the new coach of the red-white Sport24.

It is worth noting that
it was Tedesco who was the first and only candidate for the post of head coach of Spartak after Oleg Kononov left. This was officially announced by Thomas Zorn, emphasizing that the contract of the German specialist is calculated until May 31, 2021.
It is also noteworthy that the director-general of the Moscow club said that Tedesco is not facing any problems at the moment, while Kononova was set before the start of the current season to win a ticket to the Champions League and win the Russian Cup, as well as to break into the group stage of the current Europa League draw, where Spartak ultimately did not qualify.
"It is too early to talk about it. He just accepted the job. Let him see what potential is. It’s necessary to relieve pressure from the coaching staff and our players, ”
- emphasized Zorn.
Assistants Domenico Tedesco in the “national” team will be Andreas Henkel and goalkeeper coach Max Urvanchki. With the first, the 34-year-old specialist worked at Stuttgart when he headed the youth teams of the Swabs, with the second at Erzgebirge, the first professional club in the German coaching career.
From the old coaching staff of Spartak, according to Tedesco, only Serbian specialist Vladimir Chepzanovich will be left, who is responsible for the physical training and rehabilitation of the players and who came to the Moscow club this summer.
Returning to the first training conducted under the leadership of the new Spartak mentor, he emphasized that he could not draw any preliminary conclusions on his charges. But he noted the players that he had already heard about. So, in addition to the German striker Andre Schürrle, he named Zelimkhan Bakaev, Georgy Jikiya, Gus Thiel and Ezekiel Ponce.
“In the first training session, it’s incorrect to talk about the strengths and weaknesses of the team. Now we have a lot of players who are in the infirmary due to injuries. In the meantime, I assess the psychological factor: in what state are the players, how do they react to certain situations. We will observe. I watched the World Cup, which was held in Russia in the summer of 2018, for the qualifying games for Euro 2020. I will single out Bakaev, Jikiya, I had heard about Til and Ponce before. I’ll try to be more with the team, get to know more closely, ”Tedesco said.
The German also noted the fact that the team has age players. Artem Rebrov and Andrei Yushchenko, for example, are even older than their new mentor. However, Tedesco emphasized that no problems should arise against this background, although during his work at Schalke the coach had a misunderstanding with Benedict Höwedes, the then captain of the Pitmen and now defender of the Moscow Lokomotiv. It was at the initiative of Tedesco that the German footballer left Gelsenkirchen.
“Different situations happen in life. You do not need to pay attention to it and look exclusively from one side. If we talk about age, then this is far from the main factor, so Eshchenko can be calm, there will be no problems here, as well as with the captain’s armband for Jika, ”the German said.
As for his prospects in Spartak, Tedesco did not predict any results. The specialist, who described himself as a “juggler,” was told that his predecessor, Oleg Kononov, promised to set up the game in four months, which in the end was remembered until his dismissal, but the German himself didn’t set any deadlines for building a game model became.
“Before the winter break, we will try to score points. At the moment, I can not promise anything. It is important to inspire confidence in the players, so that they recover after several defeats. It is necessary to cheer up the team. Next year we will look at the situation differently, ”said the coach.
The first match under the leadership of Domenico Tedesco Spartak will be held on October 19: within the framework of the 13th round of the Russian Premier League, the red-and-white in their field will be accepted by Kazan Rubin.
